Prayers for a Peaceful Day (2022)

A short trio written for viola, 'cello, and piano, Prayers for a Peaceful Day is my response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. I'm generally adverse to writing works that are inspired by contemporaneous events. They don't always age well and the process seems just a bit opportunistic to me. Still, I found myself moved by the events of the war that were reminiscent of my reactions to the events of the protests and massacre at Tiananmen Square. Between completing the work and premiering it, there were two mass shootings that made the headlines in the US and other number of other tragedies throughout the world. I realized that every day, someone, somewhere is praying for a peaceful day. This work was written for and premiered at the first concert of the UAPB Symphonic Pride by Ashton Laurent, viola; Derrick Rainey, 'cello; and Richard Bailey, piano.
